HessFest XVI is Mike Hess Brewing's 16th annual anniversary festival, and it features the full tap lineup with special anniversary releases, live music through the afternoon, a cornhole tournament, and food vendors. Proceeds benefit OAK (Operation Awareness & Kindness) and Zero8Hundred, two San Diego charities supporting veterans and mental health. Pier Plaza Park sits directly on the beach in Imperial Beach, one of San Diego's most underrated coastal neighborhoods and the southernmost city in California. The mood is relaxed, community-forward, salt-air infused. Dogs welcome. Families welcome. People who just want to drink good beer at the beach while a good band plays: extremely welcome. The band is different but the feeling is not — you sit down, the sun drops behind the Hotel Del, and for ninety minutes nothing in the world requires your password. Coronado Promenade Concerts has run free Sunday concerts at Spreckels Park every summer for decades, and the 2026 season stretches seventeen shows across fifteen Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Two of those Sundays are double-headers — May 24 and August 23, the latter celebrating America's and the U.S. Navy's 250th birthday with SixWire, the Nashville band that has played every military branch's birthday for years. Big Time Operator, a five-time San Diego Music Award winner for Best Big Band, brings sixteen musicians on stage for the June 28 show. The Suenamis — Coronado's own high-energy dance band — close out the season on September 6. Bring a low chair and something cold. Dogs on leashes welcome. No tickets, no reservations, no catch. From mid-June through late August, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park transforms into San Diego's best free outdoor concert venue. The Twilight in the Park series runs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings throughout the summer — a long-running tradition that fills one of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in the city with military bands, Dixieland jazz, big band swing, and Latin salsa. The 2026 summer season begins June 16 and runs through August 27. Concerts start at 6pm and typically run 90 minutes. The Spreckels Pavilion holds several thousand people and the lawn behind it opens up to the park — families set up blankets on the grass, couples bring picnics, and a crowd that mixes every demographic San Diego actually has shows up in comfortable shoes and good spirits. The Spreckels Organ Pavilion is located near the main Balboa Park promenade, between the Natural History Museum and the California Tower. From the Cabrillo Bridge entrance off Laurel Street, it is a 10-minute walk through the central walkway. Parking in Balboa Park is free on weekdays and evenings; the lots off President's Way and off Park Blvd both serve the pavilion well. The series is presented by the City of San Diego and is completely free — no tickets, no reservation. You walk in, find a spot, and stay as long as you want. The military band nights draw local community groups; the Latin salsa nights draw dancers. The July 4th weekend program is typically themed around patriotic music. The Coronado Promenade Summer Concerts have been running for decades because the formula is perfect: one band, one park, one sunset, no cover. Bring a picnic. Spread a blanket. The kids run laps around the gazebo while the adults lean back into their chairs and let the music do the work. Tribute bands, swing ensembles, Americana acts, classic rock — the lineup rotates but the vibe never changes. The August 23 show is a double-header celebrating America's and the U.S. Navy's 250th birthday with Nashville's SixWire and special guest performers. The best organists in the world do not, as a rule, pass through San Diego on a Monday night — unless somebody makes a point of bringing them. Every summer for decades, the International Summer Organ Festival has answered that belief by bringing virtuosos from across the United States and abroad to perform Monday evening concerts at the Pavilion. The Monday series is distinct from the Sunday afternoon concerts. It runs longer, draws a more focused audience, and features soloists who have built careers around the instrument. The programs change weekly — each visiting organist chooses their own — which means returning more than once gives you a genuinely different experience. An instrument this complex and this rare rewards an audience willing to sit with it more than once. The outdoor setting in Balboa Park at dusk is a venue unto itself. The marine layer has usually burned off by evening, and the amphitheater-style seating faces the organ facade while the park goes quiet behind you. Bring something to sit on and stay for the full program. The Organ Pavilion is one of the better concert venues in San Diego in summer, free, and most people who live here have never been. Free. Every Tuesday evening, Main Street in downtown Huntington Beach closes to cars and opens as a walking street market. Surf City Nights runs year-round, but the summer editions have a different quality: the air is warm after dark, the pier is a ten-minute walk, and the crowd is relaxed in the way that only happens on a Tuesday night in a place where the weekend feels like it never fully ended. Free. Merchant specials from the downtown shops and restaurants that line Main. Runs 5pm to 9pm every Tuesday on Main Street from Pacific Coast Highway to 5th Street. Park in the city garage and walk. The pier at the end of Main is worth the extra five minutes.

A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into. Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel. Twenty years of writing songs about the slow dissolve of everything beautiful, and somehow the beauty keeps winning. Death Cab for Cutie brings the I Built You A Tower World Tour to Gallagher Square at Petco Park on August 4, with Nation of Language opening, and the evening will sound exactly like what happens when indie rock grows up and refuses to stop meaning something. Ben Gibbard has spent two decades turning heartbreak into architecture, songs with rooms you can walk through, staircases that lead to a view you were not ready for. The live show at Gallagher Square's intimate six-thousand-capacity outdoor stage brings those rooms to life in a way that a headphone cannot. There is a difference between hearing Transatlanticism alone in your car and hearing it with six thousand people who all drove to the same parking lot for the same reason. Nation of Language opens the evening with their own brand of synth-driven post-punk that pairs perfectly: cold surfaces, warm hearts, the whole contradiction. The best comedy rooms are the ones where the hosts know each other's bits well enough to wreck them mid-set, and you're close enough to watch it happen. That's the whole idea behind In-Unit Laundry, the Tuesday stand-up night MK Paulsen and Simon Gibson run at the Lyric Hyperion in Silver Lake -- the small theater next to the cafe, about a hundred seats, a stage low enough that eye contact is unavoidable. The bill rotates: touring headliners passing through, LA circuit regulars working out new material, the occasional unannounced drop-in. The crowd is the alt-comedy crowd, which is to say people who follow specific hosts and specific podcasts and already know who's going up before the lineup posts. Bring the friend whose sense of humor is slightly too specific for the big clubs. Doors are early so you can grab a coffee or a drink from the cafe side first. Tuesdays at eight. Tickets are cheap because the room is small, and the cafe stays open after the show.

You drop your name in a bucket, and fate decides whether you read tonight — in front of two hundred strangers who showed up on a Tuesday to hear exactly that. That's the deal at the longest-running spoken-word open mic in Los Angeles. Dante Basco started it in his living room in 1998 with Ron 'Shihan' Van Clief, Devan 'Poetri' Smith, and 'Brutha' Gimmel Hooper, and Da Poetry Lounge has run every Tuesday since, now at Greenway Court Theatre on Fairfax. This is the room that produced half of LA's spoken-word generation — Saul Williams, Beau Sia, Jamie DeWolf, in their different decades. The third Tuesday of every month is the slam: same room, real stakes. The rest of the time it's open — you sign up, you wait to hear your name, and whether you kill or freeze, the room holds you either way. Doors at eight, bucket at eight-thirty, mic at nine. Five dollars for open mic, ten for slam, cash only, all ages. Some of tonight's names have already been called. Some of them haven't.
