Across the road from the famous one, there is a quieter version that has been doing its own thing for sixty years and never once tried to compete. That is the whole pitch. It opened in 1966 as a deliberate alternative — more accessible, more internationally sourced, and a good deal easier to actually look at art in on a warm canyon afternoon. More than a hundred and fifteen artists show painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media through open-air galleries, and because the roster reaches well past the county you keep finding work with no business being this close to the beach. Live entertainment runs daily underneath it. The grounds sit a short walk from the bigger campus, so plenty of people do both and then spend dinner arguing over which one they preferred. Go on a slow day and let the canyon do the rest.
