Every August, the stretch of South Coast Highway 101 in downtown Encinitas transforms into an open-air tasting room. The Taste of Encinitas invites you to stroll from restaurant to restaurant, sampling signature bites from the cafes, bakeries, seafood houses, and taco spots that make this beach town one of the best food corridors in North County San Diego. This is not a festival with a stage and a headline act. This is a neighborhood walking its own Main Street, tasting what the people who live here already know is there. The restaurants that participate are not pop-ups. They are the places with regulars who come every Tuesday. The event runs from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, which means you are eating as the sun drops behind the Pacific a few blocks west. The light in Encinitas at that hour is the kind of thing people post about without thinking about it. Bring comfortable shoes — you will walk more than you expect, and every block has a reason to stop. Tickets are available through the Encinitas 101 Main Street Association. If you have eaten at one Encinitas restaurant but never walked the whole strip in one night, this is the invitation.
