About

Low notes arrive through the ground before they ever reach your ears. You feel them in the legs of the chair and in your sternum, and then the upper voices float up into the eucalyptus overhead, and you understand that nothing prepares a person for a pipe organ at full power outdoors.

The instrument in that pavilion is the largest outdoor pipe organ on earth, built before either world war and still played weekly, which almost nowhere else can claim. Monday evenings through the summer, organists come from around the world for solo recitals on it. Some nights it accompanies a silent film live — a century-old art form resurrected in real time for a lawn full of people who wandered over.

No dress code, no cost, no pretension. Seats fill early, so bring a low chair and a sweater; the surrounding lawn sounds excellent because the organ was built to throw into the canyon.

This city has had this for over a century. Most of the city still has no idea.

Spreckels International Summer Organ Festival 2026 — Monday Evenings
Every Monday · Next Aug 3 Free Spreckels Organ Pavilion, 2211 Pan…

The best organists alive do not, as a rule, pass through San Diego on a Monday night, unless somebody makes a point of dragging them here. Somebody does, every summer. The Monday series is a different animal from the Sunday afternoon concerts: it runs longer, draws a more focused audience, and features soloists who have spent whole careers on this one instrument. Each visiting organist chooses their own program, so going twice gets you two genuinely different evenings, and an instrument this strange rewards a second visit more than a first. Then there is the setting, which is half the case for going at all. The marine layer has usually burned off by evening, the amphitheater seating faces the organ facade, and Balboa Park goes quiet behind you as the light drops. It costs nothing, it requires no ticket, and most people who have lived here their whole lives have still never gone. Bring something to sit on and stay for the whole program. Then tell somebody, because that is how a thing this good survives.

San Diego International Kids Film Festival 2026 — Carlsbad

Most film festivals are built for adults with opinions. This one is built for the humans who have not learned to be cynical yet — and the stories it screens are better for it. The San Diego International Kids Film Festival returns to Carlsbad for its 22nd year, screening culturally diverse films created for children and young audiences from around the world. Three days at the Schulman Auditorium and MiraCosta Concert Hall. Shorts, features, animation, live-action — all selected because they trust their young audience enough to show them something real. The festival is not a babysitting service with a projector. It is a curated program that takes kids storytelling seriously — which means taking kids seriously, which means showing them worlds that expand who they think they can be. The kind of festival where a six-year-old from Carlsbad watches an animated short from South Korea and comes home asking questions nobody expected. August 21 through 23, 2026. Tickets available through Ticketbud. Family-friendly programming all three days.

Epcot International Food and Wine Festival 2026 -- Walt Disney World
Aug 27 – Nov 21, 2026 Epcot, Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830

Late August through mid-November, Epcot stops being a place you take children and turns its World Showcase into a global food market for adults — eighty-plus kiosks representing countries that do not share borders but do share this pavilion. The atmosphere is unmistakably grown-up. Wine, craft beer, international street food, live concerts in the Eat to the Beat series, and cooking demonstrations by culinary professionals fill the hours between the park's permanent attractions. The World Showcase lagoon path becomes a global food walk - French crepes alongside Canadian craft beer alongside Japanese sushi alongside Brazilian cheese bread. The scale is enormous but the pacing is deliberately slow; this is wandering, tasting, settling in at a lakeside table and watching the October sky come down over the water. If you have any affinity for food, international cuisines, or Disney, it lands: the festival is included with standard EPCOT park admission and the food kiosks are paid separately in small, affordable sampling portions. For non-Disney regulars, Epcot's single loop layout makes the festival more accessible than most of the park, since one path covers nearly all the festival content. For Disney regulars, the August-through-November window is one of the best times to visit - lower crowds than peak summer, full festival atmosphere. A few things veterans know: weekday mornings are least crowded for the kiosk lines. The Eat to the Beat concert series, included with admission, runs multiple times daily at the America Gardens Theatre, so arrive 30 minutes early. The annual festival passport lets you stamp each global marketplace kiosk - casual visitors ignore it and obsessives complete it on day one. Party for the Senses premium dinner events sell separately and book out quickly, so reserve early if interested. Disney Transportation runs from most on-property resorts directly to EPCOT; the parking lot is paid. More than two million people participate each year, most of them not because they are Disney fans but because the festival delivers one specific feeling: the world's food culture on the same block, walkable in an afternoon. The Epcot International Food and Wine Festival runs from late August through mid-November at Walt Disney World.

Orange International Street Fair 2026
Sep 4 – Sep 6, 2026 Old Towne Orange Plaza, Chapman Av…

Fourteen countries set up kitchens on the same four blocks, and for three days the whole town smells like something your grandmother would have made if your grandmother had been from everywhere at once. It runs on a principle most food festivals abandoned decades ago: no entrance fee, no VIP section, and no sponsor telling you which direction to walk. You show up. You eat Brazilian food beside a stage playing Irish music beside a booth selling Greek pastries. The line for the gyros touches the line for the lumpia touches the line for the schnitzel. You lose a child in the kids' street and find them covered in face paint holding a stick of something fried. Old Towne Orange, the historic plaza at the center of it, eight stages running continuously, crafts booths down every street. Bring cash — plenty of vendors take nothing else. Come hungry, and bring the person who claims they have already tried everything. Watch that hold up for about ten minutes.

Twenty paddlers hit the water on the same beat, and for the next two hundred and fifty meters the only question that matters is whether twenty strangers learned to breathe as one body. The boats are forty feet long, hand-painted with dragon heads and tails, and the races are over before you finish describing them. Between heats there are lion dances, taiko drums, and the sort of food-truck village that only materializes when several cultures decide to throw a party on the same stretch of shoreline on the same weekend. Mission Bay has hosted this since the early two thousands. Teams come in from across the country — corporate crews, community clubs, and people who saw a flyer and said yes before thinking it through, which is how most of the good ones start. Spectators watch free from the grass. Find nineteen people. Learn to breathe together. Come back next year in a boat.

A horn section does not care about borders. It never has. The notes drift across the line the same way the smell of street tacos drifts north and the freeway hum drifts south, because the line is a legal fact and not a musical one, and players on both sides have known that since long before anyone drew it. The festival stretches across both cities — free open-air concerts in downtown Tijuana and downtown San Diego, plus a ticketed headline night at the arts center in Escondido — which effectively turns the border region into one stage. Brian Blade headlines with his Fellowship Band, a group that moves between jazz, rock, folk and gospel without asking permission to cross anything. Mingus Dynasty plays the Charles Mingus book with Wayne Escoffery, Helen Sung and Boris Kozlov. The free shows are the heart of it: music in public, no velvet rope. Go stand on a sidewalk and hear something extraordinary for nothing.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta 2026 — Albuquerque, NM
Oct 4 – Oct 12, 2026 From $15 (daily) Balloon Fiesta Park, 5000 Balloon …

At dawn on mass ascension days, hundreds of hot air balloons inflate on the field at once and rise together above the Rio Grande valley. The Sandia Mountains turn pink behind them. You will describe this to people for years. The Mass Ascension is the centerpiece: twice during the fiesta's run, hundreds of hot air balloons — ranging from classic teardrops to balloons shaped like animals, cartoon characters, and abstract sculptures — launch in waves from the launch field as the sun rises over the mountains. The scale of it is genuinely difficult to photograph adequately. You are standing in a field watching the sky fill, slowly and then all at once, with color. The Balloon Glow events — where tethered balloons illuminate simultaneously after dark, turning the field into a landscape of lanterns — are equally stunning in a quieter way. Is the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta worth it? Yes, with no caveats. This is one of the most visually singular events in North America. You do not need to be a balloon enthusiast to be moved by the Mass Ascension. The event is family-appropriate, accessible, and designed for the general public — not a niche audience. The Special Shape Rodeo, where unusual balloon designs launch together, is particularly good for children and for anyone who has ever found a hot air balloon shaped like a bee with a thousand others inexplicably delightful. Before you go: the event grounds open at 5am for Mass Ascension days — arrive early for field access and good viewing position. Parking is extensive but fills fast; shuttle services from remote lots are the recommended approach. October mornings in Albuquerque are cold (30s–40s°F at launch time) and afternoons are warm; dress in layers. The Gondola Club offers premium field access. Many attendees come for a single day; the full nine days is for balloon devotees. Tickets are purchased in advance. Albuquerque, New Mexico. October 4–12, 2026. The Albuquerque Box Effect — a unique wind phenomenon created by the surrounding mountain geography — is what makes the city the balloon capital of the world. Balloons can fly in different directions at different altitudes, allowing pilots to navigate with precision that would be impossible elsewhere. Festival organizers understood this in 1972 and built an institution around it. The location is not incidental. It is the reason the event is what it is.

What you remember from a festival this size is not on the screen. It is the moment the lights come up and the person who made the film stands out of the row behind you and turns out to be a nervous human being answering questions. Bigger festivals cannot hand you that. Here you get a week of films that played Venice or Toronto or Sundance a few weeks earlier, screened downtown within walking distance of each other, with directors and cast actually in the building afterward. International competition titles, American documentaries, shorts programs, and features with local roots. The evenings turn social, premieres bleeding into parties until the entire arts scene of the city is in the same few blocks for the week. Downtown San Diego in October, passes or single tickets, trolley to the door. See one film alone and one with somebody. The second is the one you will still be arguing about in December.

An hour before dawn out in the desert, the air goes completely dead still and the light has not yet decided what color it intends to be. That is the hour hundreds of balloons choose to leave the ground together. The mass ascension is the entire event. Every burner on the field firing at once, color swelling up out of the dark, then the slow collective lift until all of them are airborne over the valley floor at the same moment. Nothing else in Southern California does that to a person. The part nobody expects to be the highlight is the glow. On the evening sessions the balloons light from the inside against a black desert sky — tethered, breathing — and people who came for the morning end up talking about the night instead. November out here sits in the exact temperature band where standing outside at dawn is a reward rather than a hardship. Wake somebody up for this. They will forgive you by the second balloon.

NHRA Winternationals — Auto Club Raceway at Pomona 2027
Feb 12 – Feb 14, 2027 Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, 2780 …

You feel a Top Fuel car before you hear it — the air changes, your sternum moves, and you understand why people drive to Pomona in February just to stand near it. That first weekend of the drag season has run on this strip since 1961, which makes it the oldest race the sport still holds, and there's a particular charge to being there while the whole season is still undecided: brand-new cars, new sponsors down the flanks, teams finding out whether an entire winter of engine work actually did anything. The cool February air is a gift here — it lets the fastest machines in motorsport make pass after pass without cooking, so you get clean, quick runs from Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle all weekend. And the pit pass is the secret: for barely more than the price of walking in, you stand a few feet from crews tearing down and rebuilding nitro engines between rounds, which is a thing almost no other pro sport lets you do. Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, 2780 Fairplex Dr, February 2027. Grandstand or GA, pit passes open to everyone. Thursday qualifying is the value play — full pro runs, thinner crowds, cheaper seats.

You found your people.

They didn't know each other before Falkor either.
