A museum courtyard in Griffith Park opens on select Friday evenings and does the thing most museums would never permit: it lets people dance in it. The finest salsa and Latin fusion bands in the city play while families spread across the plaza. Lessons run early for anyone willing to be publicly bad at something. Food trucks line the lot. The sun goes down behind the park and nobody stops.

No reservations, no rope line, no cost to walk in. Gates open in the early evening at the museum on Western Heritage Way, and the parking is free too.

You eat off a truck, you dance badly with your children, and you drive home remembering why you live here.
