Autumn barely registers in Southern California — the light shifts a little, the evenings cool, and that is mostly it. Which is exactly why the drive out to Valley Center matters. Past the last strip mall the hills open up, and there sits a century-old farm that has been handing kids their first pumpkin since before their parents were born. Hay bales taller than a five-year-old. A tractor hayride that rattles just enough to feel like an adventure. A straw maze, a corn pit, pony rides, and acres of orange scattered across dirt you are allowed to walk on and dig through until you find the one. This is the season Californians have to go looking for, and Bates is where it has always been kept. Open daily from September 17 through October 31, no ticket to get in, just the slow pleasure of an afternoon that smells like straw and kettle corn. Come for the pumpkin. Stay because nobody is rushing you out.
