About

Making jokes about power is easy when the worst that happens is an angry tweet; Bassem Youssef did it in a country where it could cost him everything, and it did. The heart surgeon turned satirist became the Jon Stewart of the Arab world, drew tens of millions of viewers, and eventually had to flee Egypt for the crime of being funny about the wrong people. That history gives his stand-up a charge most comedy never touches — sharp, fearless material about identity, war, exile, and the absurdity of being a Middle Eastern man explaining the Middle East to the West. For the Arab diaspora especially, this is catharsis with a scalpel. Friday, October 9, 2026, 7:30pm, Balboa Theatre. Come laugh at the things that are usually too painful or too dangerous to say out loud, in a room full of people who have been waiting to hear someone finally say them. It is a rare night when a whole community gets to laugh at its own expense, on its own terms.

Tortoise at Belly Up Tavern
In 6 days · Aug 1 $30-$35 Belly Up Tavern, 143 S Cedros Ave,…

There was a stretch of the nineties when a handful of bands decided instrumental rock could be patient -- no vocals, no hurry, just musicians listening to each other build something -- and almost every band that came after learned the shape of it from this one. Tortoise has been at it since 1990, the Chicago post-rock catalog that taught the genre what it could be when nobody was rushing. Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach is exactly the scale for it: six hundred capacity, the venue that books the legends the radio missed and the audience already loved. Bring the person who owns TNT and Standards on vinyl -- and the room will be full of them, plus the people who learned about Tortoise from those people. Saturday, August 1. Doors at seven, music at eight. Thirty to thirty-five dollars at the door. The drive from LA is two hours; people make it without complaining.

Quicksand with Bane and Soul Blind at Belly Up Tavern
Aug 12, 2026 Belly Up Tavern, 143 S Cedros Ave,…

Heavy and melodic were supposed to be opposites until Quicksand spent thirty years proving they weren't — carrying the weight of the late-'80s New York hardcore scene Walter Schreifels came up in while writing hooks that lodge in your chest and stay. The people who got it then never let go. Quicksand at Belly Up Tavern, with Bane and Soul Blind opening, turns a Solana Beach club into a reunion: the friend who put you onto Slip in the '90s, the coworker you didn't know was secretly in the scene, the forty-somethings who still know every word and the kids discovering it now. Belly Up is small enough that there's no bad spot and nowhere to hide — you're in it, sweating, ten feet from the band. This is a 'we have to go' text, not a 'maybe.' Wednesday, August 12, 2026, doors 7:30 PM at Belly Up Tavern, Solana Beach. Tickets via Live Nation.

Built to Spill at Belly Up Tavern
Aug 29, 2026 $35-$45 Belly Up Tavern, 143 S Cedros Ave,…

Some guitar leads earn the right to go on as long as they want, and Built to Spill's are the argument for it -- melodic, patient, loud enough to stay honest across a whole road-trip's worth of miles. Doug Martsch has been running the Boise catalog since 1992, the band that earned its cult one drive at a time rather than one radio spin. Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach is the right room for them in San Diego County: six hundred capacity, the kind of venue where you can read the song titles off the setlist taped to the floor. Bring the friend who put There's Nothing Wrong With Love on every mixtape they ever made. The crowd is the people who own it on vinyl and are now in their forties, plus the ones who learned the catalog from them. Saturday, August 29, doors at seven, music at eight. Tickets through Belly Up directly, thirty-five to forty depending on when you grab them.

Rodrigo y Gabriela at Belly Up
Nov 10, 2026 TBA Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, 224…

Two acoustic guitars, no band, no backing tracks — and yet Rodrigo y Gabriela fill a room the way amplified bands can't. July 17 at the Belly Up in Solana Beach. The percussive technique alone is worth the ticket. At 600 capacity, this is the last size venue where a performance this technical still feels personal. Tickets from $35 via Belly Up.
