Making jokes about power is easy when the worst that happens is an angry tweet; Bassem Youssef did it in a country where it could cost him everything, and it did. The heart surgeon turned satirist became the Jon Stewart of the Arab world, drew tens of millions of viewers, and eventually had to flee Egypt for the crime of being funny about the wrong people. That history gives his stand-up a charge most comedy never touches — sharp, fearless material about identity, war, exile, and the absurdity of being a Middle Eastern man explaining the Middle East to the West.
