You knew the voice before you knew the name. It came through the back of your mom's car, or through a sibling's bedroom wall, and it registered less as pop than as a feeling you did not yet have words for.

The solo years have been a slow, deliberate shedding. Every record quieter, stranger and more honest than whatever the industry had planned for him. The newest borrows its title from a South Indian vocal percussion tradition, rhythmic syllables spoken with the body before any instrument gets involved, and it is the most personal thing he has made. It went to the top of the charts anyway, not on nostalgia but because the people who grew up with that voice grew up too. This is his first run headlining arenas alone, no openers padding the runtime, just him and a band and a production built around the record's architecture.
