Certain movies function less like films and more like a password. You quote one line at a party, somebody across the room answers with the next one, and the two of you have found each other. This deeply absurd summer camp comedy from 2001 has been doing that quietly for two decades.

Watching it outdoors on a lawn in Griffith Park is the correct format, mostly because of the crowd. Everyone around you laughs at the right parts, including the parts that are not jokes so much as tone. And there is a layer of stupidity to sitting on a hill in a park watching a movie about summer camp that the film itself would wholeheartedly endorse.

Doors early evening with a live band and a sprawl of food trucks running from Korean tacos to artisan ice cream, then the film once it gets properly dark. Dog-friendly, bar on site, parking free.
