About

Twenty years ago, someone planted a rock festival in the red dirt of northeastern Oklahoma and it never left. Rocklahoma is now the longest-running destination rock festival in the American heartland, and its 20th anniversary lineup plays like a dare: Slayer closing Sunday on the 40th anniversary of Reign in Blood. That sentence alone is worth the drive.

Three days. Three stages. Over 40 bands. Friday belongs to Godsmack, Stone Temple Pilots, Hollywood Undead, Buckcherry, Jet, Crossfade, and Slaughter. Saturday is Papa Roach, Cypress Hill, Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise, Black Veil Brides, Wolfmother, and Living Colour. Sunday builds to Slayer through Black Label Society, The Pretty Reckless, Insane Clown Posse, Suicidal Tendencies, and more.

The Rockin' Red Dirt Ranch in Pryor is not a converted parking lot or a repurposed fairground. It is 200 acres of festival-purpose land where the camping is part of the experience, not an afterthought bolted onto a day-pass event. Veterans park their trucks in the same spot every year, know which camping zone has the best shade, and have opinions about the merch line timing that they will share whether you asked or not. The dust gets in everything. Nobody complains — the dust is part of the deal.

Rocklahoma draws a specific crowd: people for whom rock music is not a genre preference but an identity. The kind who still own a leather jacket from a show that no longer exists in a venue that has been demolished. The 20th anniversary is the reason the casual fans show up. Slayer's Reign in Blood at 40 is the reason the lifers clear their calendar. Both groups end up in the same field, covered in the same red Oklahoma dirt, watching the same set that reminds them why they started listening in the first place.

If you grew up on any of these bands — if you wore the shirt before the reunion tour, if you remember when Cypress Hill was dangerous and Dropkick Murphys played basements — this is the weekend where 30,000 people who feel the same way gather in one field and prove the music outlasted the decade that made it. Slayer alone would justify the trip. Everything else is the bonus.

Labor Day weekend, September 4-6, 2026. Rockin' Red Dirt Ranch, Pryor, OK 74362. Weekend passes, VIP packages, and camping at rocklahoma.com.

On the One Car Meet — 10th Anniversary at Noble Ale Works, Anaheim
In 5 days · Aug 8 1621 Sinclair St B, Anaheim, CA 92…

Somewhere between the third lowrider and the first IPA, you stop thinking of it as a car show. On the One has been running for ten years out of Noble Ale Works in Anaheim, and the people who come back every time will tell you the same thing: it is not about the cars. It is about the moment your neighbor rolls up in something he has been working on in his garage for two years and you see it finished for the first time. Classics, cruisers, convertibles, custom bikes — the lot fills with whatever people built or restored or inherited and loved enough to drive here. Hot food vendors, live music, trophies for Best of Show and Best Convertible, and the kind of craft beer situation that happens when you hold a car meet at a brewery. Saturday, August 8, 2026 from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM. 1621 Sinclair St B, Anaheim, CA 92806. Free entry. The kind of afternoon where you came for the cars and stayed because someone’s story about a transmission rebuild was actually riveting.

Same brewery, same beachfront park, same crowd of people who have been coming since the tent was smaller — and that continuity is the whole reason this one still fills up. Sixteen years in, Mike Hess pours the full lineup plus anniversary releases that exist for one afternoon and then never again. A band plays through the heat. A cornhole bracket gets unreasonably serious. Dogs wander. Food vendors work the edges. Proceeds go to OAK and Zero8Hundred, two San Diego organizations working on veterans and mental health, which is why regulars treat the ticket as a donation with a beer attached. It sets up on Pier Plaza Park in Imperial Beach, the southernmost city in California, salt air included. General admission is free; the beer experience and Superfan tiers are what get you the pours. Text it to the friend who insists they have been everywhere in San Diego. They have not been down here, and they will not shut up about it afterward.

Bleach 30th Anniversary Special — San Diego 2026
Aug 22, 2026 San Diego, CA

Bleach fans have waited more than a decade for the Thousand-Year Blood War arc to reach animation, and now that it has, San Diego gets its own chapter in the 30th anniversary. This is not a generic anime event. The anniversary circuit selects cities with deep fan communities, and San Diego earned its spot. Expect curated screenings of pivotal TYBW episodes, exclusive merchandise from the 30th anniversary line, a character cosplay contest judged by convention veterans, and panel discussions led by the local community that has been with this series since its Shonen Jump debut in 2001. The timing is the point: the TYBW anime is in its most critical stretch, the Quincy invasion nearly complete, and the people organizing around this event have been holding a promise they waited ten years to see kept. The crowd runs mixed - manga readers who started at issue one alongside newcomers who found Bleach through the 2022 revival - and San Diego's anime scene skews knowledgeable, so expect deep-cut conversation and serious cosplay. Limited attendance keeps the access intimate. Tickets via Ticketmaster.

Floating cities, ancient robots, and a girl drifting down out of the sky. Miyazaki opened the studio with this one and never once talked down to the child or to the adult sitting in the same room watching it. Forty years on it works as a quiet faith with millions of adherents, and once a year the fest drags them out of their living rooms and back into a theater. Laputa at the size it was designed for. A full house of strangers gasping at exactly the same frames in exactly the same order, having all seen it a dozen times already. Dubbed and subbed showings both. SoCal's anime community treats these screenings as a seasonal pilgrimage, which is why the room fills with people who could recite it and came anyway. Send this one to the friend who says they do not do anime. This is the specific film that ends that sentence forever.

Ten years of making the case that blues isn't dead — it just moved to Long Beach and brought a horn section. The New Blues Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary on August 29-30, 2026 at Shoreline Aquatic Park in Long Beach. Two days of live blues and roots music on multiple stages, right on the water. The lineup leans into what the festival has always championed: the artists carrying the blues tradition forward, not just preserving it. Kids under 12 attend free. Food vendors, a beer garden, and the kind of crowd that knows when to clap during a guitar solo. Shoreline Aquatic Park, 200 Aquarium Way, Long Beach, CA 90802. Tickets at newbluesfestival.com. You either know someone who needs this or you are someone who needs this. Either way, two days by the water with music that doesn't apologize for having feelings.

Ten years ago a record slipped out that most people missed entirely and a devoted few never quite recovered from. Fever Daydream was Greg Puciato — better known for screaming his lungs out in Dillinger Escape Plan — turning hard left into lush, aching, synth-drenched pop that sounded like heartbreak lit by a dashboard at 3am. A decade on, The Black Queen is playing it front to back, and the small confines of Soda Bar are perfect for it: a room of people who found this album in a low moment and carried it quietly ever since, finally in one place to feel it together. Expect fog, neon, and a crowd singing along to songs they thought only they knew. Thursday, September 10, 2026, Soda Bar, 21+. Go stand in the glow of a cult record turning ten, surrounded by the other people it saved — the ones who never needed it to be popular to know it was perfect.

Some music does not belong to a genre so much as to an afternoon: the cooler is open, somebody's uncle is on the grill, and this is what has been playing underneath every one of those days for fifty years. Half a century of it, from Honolulu out to every backyard in Southern California that ever hosted a luau nobody planned properly. The anniversary show brings that catalog to the vineyards outside Temecula, and the crowd it pulls is the whole point — the Hawaiian-music community here turns out for this band the way you turn out for family. Bring a bottle and your most unhurried self. Somewhere between the second song and the sunset you stop checking your phone, and then you notice everyone around you already had. Send it to the person whose house always smelled like that on a Sunday.

DAS BUNKER 30th Anniversary with CombiChrist
Oct 2, 2026 $35+ Catch One, 4067 W Pico Blvd, Los A…

A room full of people in black moving on the same downbeat makes a very particular sound, and Los Angeles has been making it in one basement or another for thirty years. DAS BUNKER is where generations of goths, rivetheads, and cybergoths found each other — the dark room that kept existing while every other scene night in this city opened and closed. For the anniversary it brings CombiChrist to Catch One: aggrotech, body music, strobes, and the communal catharsis this particular crowd knows how to generate on command. This is less a concert than a homecoming. Thirty years of people who did not fit anywhere else, in one room, at full volume, finding out that most of them are still here. Wear the black you save for occasions. Charge your boots. Dance until the lights come up with a family you did not know you had.

Roxette: 40th Anniversary Tour 2026
Oct 5, 2026 $50+ The Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont …

Certain songs are welded permanently to a specific heartbreak, a specific summer, a specific movie scene you have never quite shaken — and for a whole generation, half of those songs turned out to be Roxette's. Listen to Your Heart, It Must Have Been Love, the ones that scored a thousand slow dances and sad drives. Four decades on, founder Per Gessle is taking the catalog back on the road for a 40th anniversary celebration, carrying the songs and the memory of the band that made them into a night built for everyone who knows every word. Taylor Dayne and the great Nick Lowe fill out a bill stacked with pop history. Under the stars at the Greek, those enormous, unashamed melodies get the setting they always deserved. Monday, October 5, 2026, 6:30pm, Los Angeles. Come sing the choruses you have known by heart since you were young enough to mean them, with a hillside full of people who never stopped.

Irvine Global Village Festival 2026 — 25th Anniversary at Great Park
Oct 10, 2026 ✨ New Great Park, 8000 Great Park Blvd, …

Irvine has 96 spoken languages within city limits. One day a year, they all show up at the same park — and the result is the closest thing SoCal has to a world expo built by your actual neighbors. The Irvine Global Village Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary on October 10 at Great Park, a free all-day celebration of the diversity that most cities claim and few actually embody. Cultural performances from dozens of nations fill the stages. International food vendors line the paths — Filipino lumpia next to Korean bibimbap next to Middle Eastern falafel next to Mexican street corn. Art installations, interactive booths, and community organizations turn the park into a living map of who actually lives in Orange County. The festival runs from 10 AM to 6 PM. Free admission. Free parking. The food alone is worth the drive from anywhere in SoCal. If you've ever wanted to eat four continents in the same afternoon while watching a lion dance, this is your day. Bring the whole family.

Spirited Away 25th Anniversary — Studio Ghibli Fest 2026
Oct 17 – Oct 21, 2026 Varies by theater Fathom Events Theaters Nationwide …

You have been homesick for twenty-five years for a place that was never real. A bathhouse lit gold over black water. A train that only runs one way, across a flooded world, into the dark. Spirited Away gave you that homesickness the first time you saw it — and this October, for one week only, its 25th anniversary and the finale of Studio Ghibli Fest 2026, Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece comes back to the big screen where the ache belongs. There is a particular silence that falls over a theater full of people who love the same film. The lights drop, Joe Hisaishi's first piano notes land, and a room of strangers stops breathing at the same moment. Ghibli Fest runs both the subtitled original and the English dub, with a piece of surprise content before each show. But the real event is the crowd — parents who were kids when this came out, now holding the hands of kids seeing it for the first time; longtime fans catching a detail they'd missed on every laptop rewatch; someone two rows back crying quietly and not caring who sees. Even if you've seen it a dozen times, you have not seen it like this. If Spirited Away is a film you carry around inside you, this isn't a question — you go. Projected, at scale, with sound that fills the room, is the version it was made for. It's rated PG and open to almost everyone, though No-Face and the spirit world can frighten very small children — parents of under-sevens should know that going in. This is not a movie to leave on in the background. It's two hours built to move you, in a room full of people who came to be moved alongside you. Tickets run through the official Ghibli Fest and participating theater box offices, and the anniversary finale sells out earliest of the whole festival — buy ahead. Choose your format on purpose: the dub is the gentle way in for young kids, the subtitled original is what the purists want. Come early for the pre-show content most latecomers miss. Go on a weekend evening if you can, when the theater fills all the way up and the silence gets deeper. Some films you own and still leave the house for. At twenty-five, Spirited Away is less a movie than a place people keep returning to — and going back together, in the dark, is how you remember why it marked you. One week in October. Then the train pulls away again.

SLAYER: Reign In Blood 40th Anniversary 2026 — Kia Forum Night 1
Nov 13, 2026 Kia Forum, 3900 W Manchester Blvd,…

Twenty-nine minutes. That's how long the original Reign In Blood runs. Twenty-nine minutes that rewrote what heavy music was allowed to be. Forty years later, the album hasn't aged a day because speed and fury don't have an expiration date. Slayer returns to the Kia Forum in Inglewood on Friday, November 13 at 6 PM for the Reign In Blood 40th Anniversary show — a night built around performing the album that made thrash metal a permanent fixture in American music. Support comes from Cannibal Corpse, Cavalera, and Crowbar — a lineup that reads like a murderers' row of extreme metal. A second night follows November 14 with the same bill. The Kia Forum is the kind of room that rewards aggression — 17,500 seats with the acoustics of a venue originally designed for basketball, which means the low end hits like a physical force. The early 6 PM start accommodates a four-band deep card that runs until the walls vibrate. Not another farewell. This is Slayer playing the album that made them Slayer, in the city where it all started. You already know if this is for you.

You found your people.

They didn't know each other before Falkor either.
