Dogs. On surfboards. In the ocean. Competing in heats. Judged by size category. And somehow taking it more seriously than the humans watching from the beach.
The 21st Annual Helen Woodward Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon returns to Del Mar Dog Beach on September 13, 2026. Dogs compete in surfing heats organized by size — from tiny to extra large — riding actual waves on actual surfboards while their owners wade in the shallows trying to look calm. The event is a fundraiser for the Helen Woodward Animal Center, and it draws a crowd that comes for the spectacle and stays because watching a golden retriever catch a wave is genuinely one of the best things you'll ever see.
Del Mar Dog Beach, north end of 15th Street, Del Mar, CA 92014. Free to spectate. Parking $25.
