About

Jesse Billauer was a world champion surfer when a wave at Zuma Beach broke his neck and left him a quadriplegic. Most people would have left the ocean behind. Jesse built an organization that brings it back. Life Rolls On puts people with mobility disabilities on adaptive surfboards at La Jolla Shores, with volunteers on each side guiding them through the whitewater. The waves at La Jolla are gentle enough to learn on and powerful enough to feel it. That is the whole point — feeling it. Not watching from the beach. Not reading about it. Riding the wave yourself, in a body that the world told you couldn't do this anymore. The volunteers come because the look on someone's face when they catch their first wave since the accident is the most honest thing they've seen all year. The event runs all day. They provide adaptive surfboards and beach wheelchairs. You bring a wetsuit, a towel, and whatever you've been carrying that the ocean might take from you for a few seconds. Saturday, September 19. La Jolla Shores. Free.
