What it was like
The first convention anybody goes to is almost never the big one. It is a folding table in a school gym, a longbox somebody drove in with, and a kid in a homemade cape meeting another kid in a homemade cape for the first time in their life.
Lompoc gets one day of that. The middle school opens its doors and turns into a comics and gaming show, and for a lot of kids on this stretch of coast it is the first time the thing they love has an actual address instead of just a group chat. Small-town cons are where the habit starts. Nobody is being processed through a queue. You can genuinely talk to the people who make the things. Family-friendly is not a marketing line here, it is a description of the room, because half the room is somebody's family.
A school gym, one Saturday, comics and pop culture and gaming under one roof.
Take the kid who has been reading alone. Let them find out they are not the only one.
