What it was like
Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game launched March 25, 2025 — a cozy life-sim set in the Shire that put you in the role of a Hobbit tending crops, cooking meals, and building friendships in Hobbiton. It was the opposite of every epic fantasy game, and Tolkien fans loved it for exactly that reason.
The release landed in the middle of a broader Tolkien revival — The Rings of Power renewed debate about lore, the tabletop community was deep into Middle-earth RPG campaigns, and fan conventions were seeing stronger attendance than they had in years. Tales of the Shire gave the community something new to gather around.
In Southern California, the overlap between Tolkien fans and the tabletop/RPG scene is substantial. Game stores regularly host Lord of the Rings-themed D&D campaigns, One Ring RPG sessions, and LotR card game nights. Steampunk and fantasy conventions in the region frequently feature Tolkien programming — panels, costume contests, and lore discussions that go three hours deep.
If you found Tales of the Shire because you love the Shire, the community that plays it is also the community that dresses as Gandalf, runs decade-long tabletop campaigns, and absolutely will argue with you about the Silmarillion.
