Al Green at Pechanga
That voice does something no other instrument in American music does: it gets quieter in order to hit harder, and the room leans in without being asked.
The catalog needs no introduction — 'Let's Stay Together,' 'I'm Still in Love with You,' 'Tired of Being Alone' — but hearing it through a car speaker and hearing it in a room this size are two different experiences, and only one of them lets you feel the phrasing land. Songs like these were built for a space where a held note has somewhere to go. The Pechanga Theater is small enough that nothing gets lost between the singer and the seats, which is the whole reason to make the drive.
Voices do not stay untouchable forever. This one has held its power for half a century.
Take the person who played these records in the kitchen. Watch them go somewhere else for an hour.
