What it was like
For one morning, everyone in the room is a beginner again. New-card day has a texture you can feel the second you walk into the shop -- forty people hunched over six packs each, sleeving creatures that didn't exist yesterday, doing math on abilities nobody has tested. On the day a Magic set becomes legal, the playing field is as level as it will ever be: no solved format, no one who's already cracked it, just a room full of players figuring it out at the same time.
That's the Prerelease, and it's the weekend that belongs to the whole Magic community rather than the grinders. Sealed means you open six packs and build from exactly what you get -- you can't show up with an optimized list, only show up and work it out. The Marvel Super Heroes set brings an IP that Magic players already recognize, which makes it a genuinely good entry point: the characters are familiar even when the mechanics aren't legible yet.
TCS Rockets runs its prereleases with everything the format needs -- organized pods, experienced judges, prize support, and the specific charge of a game store the morning a set drops. Playing well here means playing well under uncertainty, and on a brand-new set, everyone in the building is under it together.
TCS Rockets, 7626 Miramar Rd, San Diego. June 19th. Arrive early for your pack allocation. Set details at magic.wizards.com.
