You get there early on purpose. The bay is in front of you, the skyline is over your left shoulder, the sun is going down over the Pacific, and by the time the orchestra plays its first note the setting has already done most of the work.

That is the trick of the place — it was purpose-built so the view and the music arrive together. The San Diego Symphony plays here across the whole summer: classical programs, film scores, pops nights, and collaborations with artists the symphony circuit does not usually bring to this city. Regulars will tell you the lawn is the social choice and the reserved seats are the full view, and that you should bring something to sit on either way. The waterfront breeze shows up in the evening no matter how hot the afternoon was.
