No wristband, no gate, no main stage telling you where to look. One evening a month a stretch of downtown just opens — gallery doors propped, lights on late, a few thousand people drifting between them with no map and no hurry. You do not attend it. You wander into it and let it decide where you end up.
For twenty years the Historic Core has done this, and it still pulls the real thing: designers, photographers, muralists, and the people who actually follow them rather than the tour-bus version of an art crowd. Galleries hold their openings for it. Art turns up in parking lots and alleys where there was nothing the night before, and half of what you remember was on no listing anywhere.
Second Thursday, 6 to 10 PM, across the galleries clustered on Spring and Main between 3rd and 9th. Free — walk in anywhere. Pershing Square and 7th St/Metro Center both drop you at the edge.
Wear shoes you can cover twenty blocks in. You will, and you won't notice until you stop.
