You have walked this street on an ordinary Tuesday and thought it was just expensive. Come back on the first Friday of the month and the same block does something Los Angeles is not supposed to be able to do anymore: it acts like a neighborhood. The cars are gone. Boutiques, galleries, and design studios stay open late, food trucks park where traffic was, and live music leaks out of storefronts instead of off a stage. There is no main stage, in fact, and no single sponsor, which is exactly why it feels nothing like a festival. What holds it together is that the independent retailers and working artists anchoring this block have been here since the eighties, through every wave of pressure to sell, and First Friday is the night the community that keeps them alive stands in one place at one time. Street parking fills early; the train and a short walk in beats circling. Send it to whoever keeps insisting Los Angeles has no street life.
