The scariest part is not staged. Griffith Park's old zoo still has its bear grottoes and concrete enclosures standing empty in the dark, and they were doing the work long before anyone hired an actor to step out of them. A tractor pulls a wagon of strangers into that, and for about ten minutes you are moving through a genuinely abandoned place with theater layered on top of it. This is the only haunted hayride in the city of Los Angeles, and it has held the corner every October since 2009. Plenty of people come for the scene more than the scares: a haunted maze, a campground with food and drinks, carnival games, and a Halloween village that works fine as a hangout even if you never board the wagon. It runs Thursday through Sunday evenings plus Halloween night, and timed entry is worth it, since weekend walk-up lines routinely run past two hours. The park at night is doing half the work here. Go with the person who insists they do not scare easily.
