About

The quiet magic of an open gaming convention is that nobody is running anything for you. You walk in, you find a table, and you play what you want with whoever wants to play it.

Four days of exactly that. Board games, tabletop RPGs, miniatures, trading card games, and everything in the gaps between them. Community-run, built for people who already know what they want to play before they arrive.

The game library stays open throughout — check something out, find a table, go. Organized tournaments run alongside the open gaming rather than replacing it. The RPG schedule carries multi-session campaigns across all four days, with pre-registration for the longer formats.

This is not a show floor with demos and a line for a five-minute taste of something. It is a room full of tables where the gaming is the entire point.

Marriott Burbank, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank. August 13-16, 2026.

No spectators. Just games.

Ventura County has spent years being the place you leave to find your people — an hour to San Diego, an hour to LA, a drive and a crowd on the other end. IchigoCon is the answer the community built for itself: proof that you don't need to be in a major metro to have a real fandom gathering, just people who care enough to make one. It's run by the nonprofit behind the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, which gives it a genuine arts-and-culture weight most hotel-hall cons never get — a single, packed day of gaming tournaments, anime screenings, voice-actor guests, a vendor hall, and a cosplay competition, all tightly run. For fans from Ventura, Santa Barbara, and the western Valley, this is the home con, the place local fandom actually forms instead of just briefly gathering in someone else's crowd. Oxnard Performing Arts Center, August 15 — a single-day pass, details and cosplay-contest registration at IchigoCon's page as the date nears. The show that deserves more attention than it gets, which is exactly the kind that grows.

Every region sends its dark horses, and most of them go home in the first week. That is what makes the opening stage the most nervous, least predictable stretch of the whole tournament. The Play-In Stage is where teams that did not walk in with a guaranteed bracket spot have to earn one, on foreign soil, against opponents they have only ever studied on video. Nothing is safe and nobody is comfortable. Upsets that reshape the entire championship happen here, in front of a few hundred people, before the broadcast audience has fully tuned in. Riot Games Arena is the tightest, loudest room in North American esports — small enough that crowd noise reaches the stage, close enough to watch a player's posture change when a fight goes wrong. From inside that building it is a different sport. Riot Games Arena, 12181 Bluff Creek Dr, Playa Vista. October 15-18. Tickets through lolesports.com. If you have only ever watched it on stream, this is the one to go to.

Somewhere between the person who has every card graded, sleeved, and logged in a spreadsheet, and the person who pulls a binder out at dinner because you have to see what they found — that is who this weekend was built for. Three days of buying, selling, trading, and standing in a room where nobody has to explain why any of it matters. Pokemon, Magic, sports cards, and the whole orbit of collectibles around them. Tournament play, vendor halls, and the floor conversations that only happen when serious collectors are in the same building with time to kill. San Diego's collector scene is already established — the same people who fill Front Row Card Show and Card Party turn up here. Badge tiers run from a single day up to a full weekend pass; venue and details at tradingcardcon.com. Send it to the person you traded with in middle school. Find out whether they still have the binder.

Pokemon TCG City Championship — San Diego Fall
Sep 13, 2026 $20 7626 Miramar Rd Suite 3900, San Di…

By the time fall comes around, the format has stopped being a mystery — the new sets have been picked apart, the regional results already told everyone what's good, and the only question left is whether you can pilot your deck better than the person across the table who prepared just as hard. A City Championship is where you find out, and there's a specific tension to a room full of people who all did their homework. Fall Cities carry a different weight than the spring events. The game's had time to breathe, the tier-one decks are known, and every round becomes a read — not just of the sixty cards opposite you but of the person shuffling them. TCS Rockets runs it with the infrastructure that makes the day feel like the event it is: organized rounds, real judges, a side-event area that keeps the day alive after you've finished your bracket. Large enough to be real, local enough to be yours. TCS Rockets, 7626 Miramar Road, San Diego — September 13, $20 to enter. Register at play.pokemon.com or at the door. If you've been building around the fall format, this is the room to test it in.

Somewhere in your closet sits a game you bought six months ago and have never once put on a table. This is where that ends. The back tables open up on Wednesday nights, and the store library is the real draw — hundreds of titles, gateway stuff through heavy euros through the social deduction games that ruin friendships, all free to play off the shelf. Come alone and slide into something already running. Bring three people and teach them the thing you have been evangelizing. Or finally cut the shrink wrap. The regulars here have been showing up long enough to know which games are worth the rules explanation and which new release is overhyped, and that informal knowledge is the whole difference between a game night that works and one that is merely organized. Doors stay open late and it costs nothing. Text the friend who keeps saying you should hang out more. This is the hang.

Every player knows the dread: showing up to game night and finding an empty table — or worse, one exhausted Dungeon Master drowning under nine people who all want to talk to the same shopkeeper. That very specific dread is what this format exists to kill. Every Wednesday in El Cajon the club runs organized tables in Primordia, a homebrew world built for this group of players rather than pulled off a shelf. RSVP through Meetup or the store's Discord and the table assignments post before the session, so you never walk in wondering whether the game is actually happening. Returning players get real continuity — choices from earlier sessions carry forward — while newcomers can drop into a one-shot without needing a page of backstory. Off The Shelf has been the East County hub for tabletop for years, and the evening runs long enough to actually finish something. Text the friend who keeps saying they want to try this but is scared to walk in cold. This is where they start.

Finding the rules was never the hard part of tabletop roleplaying. Finding four other people whose weeknights line up with yours — and staying friends with them long enough to actually finish a campaign — is the hard part. Adventurers League deletes that problem. You walk in with a character — or you build one at the table — and you sit down inside a story that is already moving. Nobody asks how long you have been playing. A first-timer who has never held a d20 and a veteran of twenty years end up in the same party, and both leave with something they want to keep pulling on. The stories stack week over week, characters grow teeth, and eventually the weeknight stops being a weeknight. GameStar Hobbies, 27380 Jefferson Ave in Temecula, every week. Character rules live at dnd.wizards.com/adventurers-league. Send it to the friend who still has dice from high school in a drawer somewhere. The seat is open and the dungeon is already in there waiting.

You do not need a group, a character, or any idea what you are doing. That is the entire design. Drop in on a Thursday evening, pick up a pregenerated character sheet, and join a table — mid-campaign or at the start of something fresh. Dungeon Masters are provided. Dice are provided. Rules questions are not tolerated so much as encouraged. Tables sort by Tier, so a first-time player rolling their first d20 sits with other new characters instead of getting lost behind a party three levels deep. If you already have a D&D Beyond character in Adventurers League legal format, bring it — after tonight it is recognized at any AL table anywhere in the world, which is the quietly remarkable part of organized play. Game Empire SD, 5037 Shawline St, San Diego — a dedicated tabletop store with real event space and staff who know the rules. Parking on-site. Most sessions need no reservation; check the store calendar. The only bad session is the one you did not show up for.

Hobby Night at Odyssey Games — Pasadena (Warhammer & Miniatures)
Every Thursday · Next Aug 6 1795 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA…

There's a specific relief in a room with lighting good enough for detail work and a table you don't have to fold up at the end of the night -- somewhere your army can just live for a few hours. Odyssey Games in Pasadena runs Thursday hobby nights for miniature wargamers, model painters, and Warhammer 40K players who want exactly that. The format is intentionally social: players set up terrain for casual games or spread their models out to paint, Warhammer 40K leading but other systems welcome, the crowd a mix of competitive players testing list builds and hobbyists at every stage of the painting queue. The store stocks paints, brushes, primers, and Warhammer product, which solves realizing mid-session you're out of the one color you need. Bring the friend whose backlog rivals yours. Pasadena's Warhammer scene is active enough that finding a casual game on a Thursday is reliable -- no Discord coordination required. Open 10 AM to 11 PM; the community gathers from 6 PM Thursdays. Free entry.

Your best deck is worthless here, and that is exactly why the room fills. Everybody cracks the same number of packs at the same table, drafts in real time from whatever the cardboard gods hand over, and builds a 40-card deck out of it. Your collection does not save you. Reading what is coming around the table does. Which makes the crowd strange in the best way: grinders using the format to stay sharp, newer players who find it kinder than Standard, and people who mostly just like opening packs beside someone who knows what they are looking at. Competitive, not grim. Nobody sighs when you ask a rules question. Miramar Road, Friday nights, prizes for top finishers, with the entry fee and current set posted on the shop's site. Bring the friend who quit when the meta got expensive. This is the format that hands the game back to them.

In 4 days · Aug 7 7626 Miramar Rd Suite 3900, San Di…

Nobody at the table has played with these cards before, and that's the entire appeal. A Prerelease is the weekend you get Magic's newest set before it's officially out — six sealed packs, a deck you build from whatever you crack, and a pod of strangers all solving the same puzzle at once. This one drops Middle-earth onto the table: Bilbo and Gandalf, the One Ring, and a Smaug card that will wreck you at least once before you work out the answer to it. Sealed is the great equalizer — no netdeck, no advantage, just you and what the packs gave you. You show up alone and leave having spent four hours with people who now also have strong opinions about how to beat a dragon. There and back again, in card form. Bring the friend who quotes the movies from memory.

Nothing teaches humility like the guy across the table flipping over a dragon on turn six while you are still setting up your mana. A prerelease is where you learn to live with that. Six packs land in front of you. You build from what you open, nobody has a tuned deck, and the cards are new enough that everyone is reading them for the first time — which is the great equalizer, and the reason this is the friendliest door into Magic that exists. Middle-earth is the setting this time: Bilbo, Gandalf, the One Ring, and Smaug sitting in somebody's pool waiting to ruin your afternoon in the best possible way. You will show up alone and leave having argued about a rules interaction with three people whose names you now know. Come lose to a dragon. It is a good story either way.

For ten years you have been waiting on Elbaph. Mostly alone — a chapter a week, on a phone, late, inside a story you have been reading for twenty-seven years. Toei built a room for it. An 87-foot LED dome where the floor and the ceiling and every wall move at once, themed to the arc happening right now instead of one that already ended. First production of its kind in North America. People who went to the Tokyo edition keep failing to describe it and landing in the same place: the closest anyone has come to standing on the Grand Line. Entry is by lottery, roughly 7,000 across both days, and Discord servers have organized group registrations since the announcement. There is no door to walk up to. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in. There are only two US Regional Championship stops this year. This is one of them. That single fact reorganizes the whole weekend. The Regional Championship determines who qualifies for the national series, which means the room is full of people whose season comes down to these tables — and you can feel it in how quiet the top tables get. But the weekend is built so you do not have to be one of them. Ten-dollar entry drafts, Commander brackets, and Standard opens run across all four days with no Regional-level preparation required. The dealer hall is one of the better places in Southern California to buy and trade singles, and it is worth the trip on its own. Star City Games runs the circuit, so the operation is tight — pairings on time, judges who know the floor, side events that actually fire. Marriott Burbank. October 9-12. If your Magic is competitive, the only question is whether this makes the season schedule.
