You have driven past the lamps a hundred times and never once gone inside. Everyone in this county has. Urban Light sits out front getting photographed by tourists while the actual museum behind it stays a someday, and the second Tuesday of the month is the day that excuse runs out, because for county residents it costs nothing. What is waiting is six thousand years of art history and more than a hundred and fifty thousand works. The Broad Contemporary building holds Koons, Sherman, Johns. The Resnick Pavilion runs decorative, Islamic, and South Asian collections. European masters sit in the Hammer Building, and the rotating special exhibitions are why this is one of the most visited museums in the country. Levitated Mass, the granite boulder hung above a concrete channel, is visible from Wilshire. Take the train, since the free day does not extend to the garage. Bring a county ID and the friend who claims they do not really do museums. Watch them go quiet in front of something.
