What it was like
Most car shows invent a category for everybody, which is another way of saying they have no categories at all. This one has three. One exists specifically for the car that still runs but only barely, and whoever enters it knows exactly what they are doing.
Bad Ass Original for the ones restored back to stock. Killer Kustom for the builds. Sourest Lemon for the beautiful disaster in the corner with a crowd around it. A single judge decides, which means whatever wins actually won something.
Behind all of it is the San Diego Automotive Museum, and the money goes to their academy teaching hands-on automotive work to kids in this county who would otherwise never get near a lift. That is not a footnote at the bottom of a flyer. That is why the show exists.
Santee, a morning that wraps by noon, free to walk in, easy off the freeway.
Bring the kid who takes things apart without permission. Let them see where that goes.
