Gardena Valley Buddhist Church Obon Festival 2026

· 1 post

The lanterns go up and the taiko drums start and for two nights in Gardena the distance between here and there dissolves. Your grandmother knew this feeling. Now you do too.

What it was like

The teriyaki chicken and yakisoba here have a following that outruns the festival itself - the temple's volunteer crews have been making these dishes for years, and some booths sell out before the final evening even begins, so the food lines start before the dancing does. This is one of the final Obon celebrations of the Southern California summer, and Gardena's Japanese American community - one of the densest and most stable in the country - brings generations of continuity to it. As darkness falls, the Bon Odori circles the yagura tower each evening; live taiko opens the dancing before it transitions into the traditional recorded Obon songs every seasoned dancer knows by heart. First-timers are welcomed, and the dances repeat, so you learn as you go. Mochi, shave ice, children's games, craft tables, and a plant sale typically run alongside. The atmosphere is a neighborhood block party with Buddhist roots - warm, multigenerational, genuinely communal. Gardena Valley Buddhist Church, 1517 W 166th St in Gardena, a short drive off the 405; parking on-site and on surrounding streets. August 1-2, 2026. No admission charge.
