From four in the afternoon until dark, hundreds of vehicles line Grand Avenue and the surrounding blocks fill with families, enthusiasts, and people who drove in from across the county. Owners talk builds with anyone who stops. Spectators walk freely between cars. There is no rope line and nobody is guarding anything.

The July show pulls the strongest turnout of the season — flags on hoods, red-and-white-and-blue paintwork, and some of the finest American iron in the county making a point of it. Classic muscle and hot rods dominate, though the full range that makes this thing worth returning to is always somewhere on the street.

It is the least intimidating door into car culture in Southern California, and nobody there will make you feel new.
