Diwali in the City — Los Angeles 2026

Then the lamps go, all at once, hundreds of them across a downtown plaza, and the crowd goes quiet for a second without anybody asking it to. Victory of light over darkness stops being a phrase you once read and becomes a thing happening in your hands. This is the center of the Festival of Lights for South Asian families across Southern California, and it has grown into a multi-stage evening: Bollywood numbers, classical Indian dance and music, a marketplace of South Asian goods and jewelry, crafts for the kids, and food from Indian, Pakistani, Nepali, and Sri Lankan kitchens that will ruin you for the version near your office. Fireworks follow the lighting at some venues. Downtown in October, all ages, free, with traditional dress welcome and everywhere. Take the friend who has only ever eaten this food out of a takeout container. Let them see where it comes from.
