What it was like
Every table at this tournament holds hundreds of hours of somebody's evenings. That's the thing outsiders miss about competitive Warhammer — you can't just show up with an army, you have to have painted it to standard first, which means the battlefield is covered in real handwork before a single die is rolled. Two people playing a brutal tactical game across a landscape they each built with a brush at midnight.
The Grand Tournament is where the Western US Age of Sigmar scene comes to settle things — five or six rounds of Swiss over two days at 2,000 points, a Southern California field deep enough to include nationally ranked players, and enough faction diversity that no two tables look alike. Even if you've never held a brush, it's genuinely something to walk: the spectacle of the armies and the quiet intensity of the games pull you in. Games Workshop sends support to the majors, sometimes with previews of what's coming next.
