Most film festivals are built for the people who fly in. This one is built for the people who already live here, which changes what gets programmed.
Ten days of American independent and international cinema each June across venues in and around downtown — narrative features, documentaries, shorts, animation. Films land here for their West Coast or US premieres, in the window between the spring circuit and the fall awards run, when a picture can still be discovered rather than anointed.
The programming reflects an industry audience that watches for a living, which is a different bar than what plays well abroad. Filmmakers stay for the post-screening conversations. Panels run on distribution and financing. The Screenwriting and Music in Film Awards close the run.
Venues shift year to year across the DTLA arts district. Tickets and passes are on the LAFF website with the schedule.
Go to something you have never heard of. That is the entire point of a festival.
