About

From a distance they look like dead brown leaves hanging in the eucalyptus — and then you focus, and realize the entire cluster is alive, hundreds of thousands of monarch butterflies packed onto the branches. When the afternoon warms, the clusters open and the grove fills with orange-and-black wings and the soft sound of flight. It is the kind of thing you have to stand inside to believe.

From late October through February, the Monarch Grove Sanctuary at Pismo State Beach hosts one of the largest overwintering monarch aggregations in North America, peaking mid-November through early January. The monarchs travel from across western North America to overwinter on the California coast, where mild temperatures and eucalyptus groves give them the specific conditions they need to survive the winter. Pismo is the most reliable and accessible of California's overwintering sites, with a dedicated sanctuary, docent volunteers who explain the biology and conservation context, and viewing platforms that let you get close without disturbing the clusters. Early-morning visits find them tightly packed and still; afternoons bring the movement. Send it to the friend who needs a reason to drive up the coast.

The sanctuary is within Pismo State Beach at 101 Pismo Ave in Pismo Beach, roughly 200 miles north of Los Angeles via US-101. Docent tours run daily during the season, typically 10 AM–4 PM. No admission charge; a day-use fee applies for parking in the state beach lot. Peak season is November through January, and the grove can be crowded on weekends during peak migration.
