What it was like
A fireball crosses low enough to throw a shadow, and a few hundred people lying on desert ground gasp at the same time.
The 2026 peak falls near a new moon — no lunar washout, the combination serious observers wait years for. At peak the Perseids throw 50 to 100 meteors an hour from a genuinely dark site, and Borrego Springs sits in a bowl ringed by mountains that block the light domes from San Diego and the Coachella Valley. It is a designated International Dark Sky Park, and the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.
Regional astronomy clubs usually set up public viewing at the peak, with telescopes for deep-sky work alongside the shower.
Roughly 90 minutes from San Diego on I-8 East to SR-79 to SR-78. The visitor center at 200 Palm Canyon Dr makes a staging point; serious observers push further out. Camping on-site. Peaks August 11-13.
Bring more layers than you think. The desert drops hard after midnight, and nobody who leaves early ever sees the best one.
