Preview Night badges are sold only as part of full convention packages or as standalone tickets through the SDCC member registration lottery. They do not appear on the general public sale and are not available at the door. The combination of scarcity and the specific experience they provide (an uncrowded convention floor, first access to exclusive merchandise, the convention space before it reaches operating capacity) makes them the most discussed and sought-after badge type in the SDCC system.
The exhibit floor on Preview Night Wednesday has an energy distinct from Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Professionals, long-time attendees, and industry insiders make up the crowd alongside the badge lottery winners. The pacing is deliberate — this is not the convention at full sprint but the convention as the people who built it experience it. Lines at the most-demanded merchandise booths begin forming before the 6 PM opening, but the rest of the floor is walkable at a pace impossible on Saturday.

FanimeCon 2026
FanimeCon is one of the oldest and largest anime conventions in the United States, running every Memorial Day weekend since 1994 at the San Jose Convention Center. It draws 25,000-30,000 attendees over four days and is the flagship event for the West Coast anime community. Unlike larger conventions, FanimeCon is entirely fan-run. No corporate booths dominating the floor. The panels, screenings, and programming are organized by volunteers who have been running this event for decades. Single-day passes may be available at the door. If you have been to Anime Expo but not FanimeCon, the culture is meaningfully different.

Anime Matsuri 2026
Anime Matsuri is one of the largest anime conventions in the South, running July 23–26, 2026 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. It draws over 30,000 attendees across four days and has been a fixture on the national convention circuit since 2007. The show is notable for its international guest programming — voice actors from both the English dub community and Japanese seiyuu appear together, giving it a wider appeal than West Coast conventions that often tilt exclusively toward the dub or sub crowd. The dealer room is substantial, the artist alley is one of the largest in Texas, and the cosplay masquerade draws serious competitors from across the region. For West Coast attendees, Anime Matsuri is a summer travel destination with a genuinely different energy from Anime Expo or FanimeCon. Houston's Gulf Coast heat is real — the convention center is air-conditioned, but outdoor lines are not. Plan accordingly. Four-day badges and specific guest photo ops sell out. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. The George R. Brown is connected to the downtown tunnel system for hotel-to-venue walking in the heat.

LA Comic Book Convention June 2026
The LA Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention is the longest-running monthly pop culture convention in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium. Dealer-focused and genuinely interesting for collectors. Tables with original comic art, golden and silver age books, horror movie posters, vintage paperbacks. The regulars know each other. SD Comic Fest 2026
SD Comic Fest is San Diego's answer to the San Diego Comic-Con overflow — a grassroots fan convention held in the spring that brings together the collector, creator, and fan communities that SDCC serves but in a more intimate, accessible format that specifically celebrates the print comics, vintage collecting, and creator culture that defined pre-corporate convention culture. Comic Fest focuses deliberately on what made comics conventions exciting before they became entertainment industry marketing events: original art dealers, back issue sellers, independent comic book creators at tables selling and signing their work, panel discussions about comics history and craft, and a collecting community that considers itself custodians of an art form. Cosplay is present but not the focal point. The vendor room at Comic Fest is a genuine market for original comic art pages, silver and bronze age books at fair prices, Golden Age finds, and small press publications from independent creators who wouldn't command a presence at SDCC's massive floor. This is where a collector who loves comics as objects — drawn pages, printed paper, the specific history of the medium — finds things they can't find anywhere else. SD Comic Fest typically runs in late April or early May in San Diego at the Town and Country Resort or similar event venue. Comic Con Revolution Ontario 2026
Comic Con Revolution is a Southern California comic book convention celebrating comics, creators, and pop culture. The Ontario edition returns to the Ontario Convention Center for a two-day weekend event on May 16 and 17, 2026, bringing together comic book artists, writers, cosplayers, collectors, and fans of all ages. Unlike larger conventions, Comic Con Revolution Ontario is built around direct creator access. Anime Conji 2026 — San Diego
Anime Conji is San Diego's longest-running fan-organized anime convention, held annually at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley for a three-day weekend of anime, manga, gaming, cosplay, and the specific community that has kept this event running for over a decade as an independent, fan-operated alternative to the larger commercial conventions.
