About

At 4,235 feet in the Cuyamaca Mountains, the elevation is high enough to grow real apples, and every fall the whole mountain town gives itself over to them. Julian has been producing fruit up here since the Gold Rush era, and from September through November it turns into apple country in a way that pulls visitors from across San Diego County and well beyond.

Mom's Pie House and Julian Pie Company are the two stops everyone names — arrive before noon on weekends or expect a line. Local orchards offer pick-your-own most weekends in October, and the historic downtown fills with food stands, antique shops, art galleries, live acoustic music, and craft vendors. There is no admission to the town itself; you just show up and explore. The recommended plan: arrive Saturday morning, pick apples, grab lunch, walk Main Street, buy pie. The drive through the Cuyamacas on Highway 79 is part of it, with fall color peaking mid-October. Text this to whoever you'd take on the drive up.
