What it was like
Somebody will address you as my lady or good sir within ninety seconds of the gate, and the only real decision of the day is whether you play along. Everybody who comes back plays along.
Out at the Santa Fe Dam the site has permanent structures rather than tents — an actual village sitting there all year waiting for spring. Jousting on the tilt field. A human chess match with real weapons and real bruises. Falconers with birds on the glove, wandering minstrels, comedy stages, artisans selling things they made with their hands, turkey legs and meat pies and mead. And if you turned up in jeans and regret it, the full costume rents at the gate, which is how most of the regulars started.
Weekend afternoons in Irwindale just off the freeway, running six weekends into late spring.
Go with the friend who insists they are not a costume person. Time how long that lasts.
