The road you're pedaling has no cars on it, no exhaust, no honking - just the Pacific on one side and the hillside terrain of Catalina on the other, because the island's roads are closed to traffic. There is nowhere else in Southern California you can race like this. The Catalina Island Triathlon opens with an ocean swim in the clear water of Avalon Bay, moves to a bike leg through the coastal hills, and finishes with a run along Avalon's waterfront promenade. Sprint and Olympic distances suit different experience levels. Everyone travels over via Catalina Express ferry from Long Beach or San Pedro - the crossing and the island are part of the experience. Athletes who come the day before and stay overnight in Avalon get the full version: dinner in the casino district, a morning race, and a post-race celebration on the waterfront. Spectators can cheer from the Avalon waterfront without going anywhere near the course; the swim and run finishes are visible from the beachfront.
