Los Angeles does not really have a town square. Once a week in the summer, it borrows one.
The Twilight Concert Series has run since 1984, which means three generations have stood on the same wooden deck and watched the sun drop into the Pacific with live music playing behind them. Admission is free and always has been.
The programming leans eclectic on purpose — Latin grooves, West African percussion, cumbia, indie folk, and occasionally something that refuses to be classified. You arrive not knowing what you will hear and leave having found something you did not expect to love. The best part is watching a few thousand people work out how to dance on wooden planks above open water.
Thursdays at 7 PM through August 27, 2026, at 200 Santa Monica Pier. Regulars claim their spots by 5:30. Bring a blanket and dress in layers — the pier turns cold after sunset no matter what the afternoon did.
Nobody organized this into a ritual. Strangers just kept coming back until it was one.
