Most towns gave up on the real summer fair a long time ago — the kind where the centerpiece is genuinely free, the parade goes down the actual main street, and the town runs the whole thing rather than hosting it.
It has happened here for sixty-six years. Free strawberry shortcake, one of the last things in Southern California that costs nothing. Carnival rides. A strawberry fashion contest. The redhead competition. Pie-eating. Live music across several stages and hundreds of artisan and food vendors, over four days that close out May.
The parade steps off Saturday morning through downtown. The shortcake line on the final afternoon is a tradition of its own, and standing in it is not a chore.
Village Green Park, 12732 Main St, Garden Grove. Admission free; rides are pay-per-ride. OCTA Route 43 stops on Main Street at the entrance.
Bring the kid you were, or the one you have.
