What it was like
Most festivals put a headliner on a poster and build the day around whoever that is. This one puts the businesses in the center and lets the DJs run underneath the whole afternoon, which turns it into something closer to a block party where everybody happens to be selling what they make.
Food, apparel, art, beauty, wellness, home goods, all of it from local and regional Black-owned vendors, with San Diego Bay sitting behind the tables. SD Melanin has been running this version of Juneteenth long enough that it now anchors the city's Black summer calendar, and the people working the booths know each other by name. Come early if you want to actually cover the market instead of skimming it.
