The filmmaker is in row four. Not behind a velvet rope. Eighty seats means the Q&A after is a real conversation, not a performance.

What it was like

The screen has eighty seats, and nobody involved is apologizing for that number.

At this size the filmmaker is not behind a rope somewhere. They are in row four. The Q&A after the credits stops being a promotional exercise and turns into a working session, because the audience asks real questions and gets real answers, and the conversation keeps going out on the sidewalk afterward. Films that would vanish inside a larger festival find the exact people they were made for.

For ten years this has been the room for work studios would not risk and networks would not greenlight — the specific, the personal, the stories told from inside instead of about. That mandate has not gotten one bit easier. Accepted filmmakers get passes, networking, and award consideration; everyone else gets a Q&A after every single screening.

Bring the friend who keeps saying nobody makes movies for them anymore. Watch their face when the person who made it is sitting two rows ahead.

This already happened.

There's more where this came from.
