Amateur boxing usually ends sometime in your thirties. Masters boxing assumes that premise is wrong.
The fighters here are forty and up — novice divisions, open divisions, men and women, flyweight to heavyweight, all of it sanctioned. What you notice within one round is that the footwork is smarter and the combinations are more deliberate. Thirty years of accumulated ring intelligence sits behind every decision, and it looks nothing like watching twenty-year-olds trade.
The venue is a motorcycle dealership on Morena Boulevard, which turns out to be exactly right. The crowd is blue-collar in the best sense: people who have been around the sport long enough to know what they are looking at, calling out a slipped jab before the judges do.
Weigh-ins early, doors late morning, bouts at noon both days. Spectators welcome.
Bring the friend who says they used to box. Watch their face when they work out that they still could.
