Happening Now
The chef from a downtown kitchen is standing next to you arguing tomato varieties with a farmer out of Fallbrook, and neither of them is performing for anybody. That is the tell. This is where the restaurants shop, which is why the produce is what it is.
Six city blocks of West Date Street close and fill — more than a hundred and fifty vendors across produce, flowers, cheese, bread, prepared food, crafts, and the stalls that only make sense after you have tried what they are handing out. It has run every Saturday for over forty years, which means it stopped being an event a long time ago and became a fixture, the thing a neighborhood organizes its week around.
A smaller, quieter version runs midweek on the same blocks: fewer tourists, same farmers.
Go hungry, go early, and take the person who thinks grocery shopping is a chore.
