Grand Performances 2026 — Free Summer Concerts at California Plaza

The atrium of a downtown office building is a strange place to find the best free concert in the city, which is exactly why nobody who works upstairs expects it. Forty years of programming has made the argument for them. The lineup moves through world music, Afrobeat, Latin, jazz, and cross-genre work from artists who fill paid rooms this size when there is a ticket attached — and under open sky with the towers standing over you, it lands differently. Everyone in the plaza arrived by choice rather than purchase, and that changes the crowd more than the acoustics do. The 40th anniversary season includes a Stevie Wonder tribute, Mariachi El Bronx, and a celebration of Ritchie Valens' legacy. California Plaza, 350 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles. Free. Mostly Saturday evenings, June 6 through August 29, with select Friday shows. Bring somebody who thinks downtown empties out after five.
