A band shell sitting dark for years is its own kind of grief, a structure built for a sound it stopped making, in the middle of a park everybody still walks through.

The Gold Shell is playing again. The arched stage at the center of Memorial Park held summer concerts for generations of Pasadena before it went quiet, and this is the season it goes back into regular use: a run of free outdoor shows across the summer, genres rotating every few weeks through pop, rock, jazz, blues and Latin, so the audience assembles from the whole neighborhood instead of one slice of it. Blankets, low chairs, kids running the perimeter, no reserved section and no dress code.
