An hour east of the city the road climbs until the air changes temperature and the orchards start, and the town at the top of it reorganizes its whole identity around the end of the harvest. That is the argument for the drive, and it has been winning for a very long time.
Pies from bakeries that have spent generations refining one recipe. Cider pressed in front of you. Orchard tours where you pick the thing off the branch yourself. Music on the main stage, craft vendors filling the street, and a crowd that is half San Diego County and half people who came here as children and have brought someone new. The gold rush built this town; the apples took it over, and there are varieties grown up here that appear nowhere else in the state.
It runs through October along Main Street, most of it free, with individual orchards setting their own prices.
