About

At some point on Sunday afternoons, the drummers start arriving at the south end of the Venice Beach Boardwalk. There is no organizer. No stage. No permit for the drums. No schedule. The circle forms around whoever arrives first. By the time sunset gets close, there are usually a hundred people playing and several hundred standing around the edges.

The Venice Beach Drum Circle has been happening since the early 1970s. It is not a performance — it is an invitation. Anyone who brings an instrument plays. Anyone who wants to dance, dances. The sound builds toward sunset and carries down the beach in both directions.

The circle runs every Sunday regardless of weather, which in Venice means it runs every Sunday. It lasts until dark. There is no encore. The drums just gradually stop, and the crowd disperses into the evening.

Sixteen years in, Mike Hess pours the full lineup plus anniversary releases that exist for one afternoon and then never again. A band plays through the heat. A cornhole bracket gets unreasonably serious. Dogs wander. Food vendors work the edges. Proceeds go to OAK and Zero8Hundred, two San Diego organizations working on veterans and mental health, which is why regulars treat the ticket as a donation with a beer attached. It sets up on Pier Plaza Park in Imperial Beach, the southernmost city in California, salt air included. General admission is free; the beer experience and Superfan tiers are what get you the pours. Fourth Street earned the Retro Row name honestly — vintage shops, record stores, and independent businesses stacked densely enough that the neighborhood never has to pretend to be anything. First Fridays is the night it stops pretending altogether. Galleries open. Shops stay late. Bars and restaurants push out onto the sidewalk. The crowd is exactly the mix thirty years of this has built: Long Beach lifers, vinyl collectors from the 562, and people who come down from Los Angeles because nothing up there is configured quite like this. Every Tuesday evening, Main Street in downtown Huntington Beach closes to cars and opens as a walking street market. Surf City Nights runs year-round, but the summer editions have a different quality: the air is warm after dark, the pier is a ten-minute walk, and the crowd is relaxed in the way that only happens on a Tuesday night in a place where the weekend feels like it never fully ended. Thursday at 5:45 you are still at your desk. Thursday at 6:15 you are sitting in a low beach chair on the grass at Fletcher Cove with salt air in your hair and a band playing something your kids are actually dancing to. The commute between those two versions of yourself is twenty minutes and zero dollars. Solana Beach and the Belly Up Tavern co-sponsor this free Thursday evening concert series every summer, and 2026 runs seven weeks from mid-July through late August. The stage sits at Fletcher Cove Park, a pocket park perched right on the sand where the bluff meets the beach. Bring low-back beach chairs and a picnic — no alcohol, no BBQs, no pets, which sounds restrictive until you realize it means the crowd is mostly families and couples who came specifically to listen. Music runs 6 to 7:45 PM, timed so the last song ends right as the sun hits the water. The insider move: park on Sierra Avenue early and walk the Coastal Rail Trail south to the park. This is the all-lowrider day at the Mission and Garnet intersection: Impalas, Monte Carlos, Cadillacs, and custom trucks line the block while their owners trade stories about the work that went into them.
