A festival with no headliner sounds like a scheduling failure until you spend a night inside one. There is no main stage here and no hierarchy, just the whole thing distributed across the bars, galleries, empty lots, and back patios of Echo Park, with one rule: everybody playing is local or close to it. What that produces is the most honest recording of what Los Angeles actually sounds like right now, genre-fluid, multilingual, made by people who live four blocks from the room they are playing and perform to their own neighbors. The best sets are almost never the biggest. Some happen in the smallest spaces to a few dozen people who will spend years telling everyone they were there. The lineup is not announced until two weeks out, which sounds like a problem and is in fact the entire proposition. You go for the neighborhood, not the names, and you let the night hand you something. Free wristband at any participating venue. Take the friend who keeps asking where the real scene went.
