Greg Mendez + Maria BC

Some songs sound like they were written alone in a bedroom at midnight because they were, and Greg Mendez's are the compliment version of that -- spare, plain-spoken, the kind of writing where a chord change carries more weight than the line over it. He records most of it by himself in Philadelphia, and Maria BC, opera-trained out of the Bay Area, opens with sad ambient pop you've heard if your playlists lean the right way. Both have small, attentive audiences who travel for the show.
