Leimert Park Music Series — Aug Showcase

Eight rising Black artists on one stage, moving between jazz and soul and hip-hop and spoken word and gospel and the spaces between -- and a room built so they can show up for each other across every genre and every stage of a career. That's what the Leimert Park Music Series does, monthly, at The World Stage, the same room that anchors the Sunday jazz tradition. August 25 is the sixth showcase; the first five filled the room. Tickets stay intentionally cheap so the audience matches the artists -- the people who'd actually come if word reached them through the right group chat. Bring the friend who's always telling you about someone you haven't heard yet. Doors before the music; the room holds about a hundred and the history is on the walls. Leimert Park Village has been the cultural center of Black LA since the late twentieth century, and the Music Series exists because someone refused to let the centerpoint move.
