What it was like
Third Avenue smells like lemon bars for one Saturday every August, and the people who grew up here already have the date circled without checking anything.
Chula Vista was the Lemon Capital of the World once, and rather than put that on a plaque it throws a street party about it, going on twenty-nine years now, which is either tradition or stubbornness and this town has never distinguished between the two. Live music on multiple stages. Artisan booths. A kids zone with glue and glitter and consequences. Enough lemon-themed food to settle any argument about whether lemon is a flavor or a lifestyle. Your grandmother knows the woman selling kettle corn. Your neighbor's kid is in the talent show and you will be expected to clap.
Downtown Chula Vista, free, from late morning into the evening.
It has been happening since before half the crowd was born. Go be part of the half that shows up.
