Described by its organizers as therapy at 120 decibels. The crowd bears that out. House of Heavy is San Diego’s nu-metal night: Slipknot, Korn, Deftones, Mudvayne, System of a Down, and the wave of heavier acts that followed — Knocked Loose, Spiritbox, Bad Omens, Motionless in White. What makes House of Heavy distinct from a standard metal night is its identity. Nu-metal carries baggage -- the genre was declared embarrassing by critics around 2003 and never officially rehabilitated. But its audience never stopped listening. This is a night for people who maintained that Deftones were always good, that Slipknot's Iowa deserved its reputation, and that the turn-of-the-millennium wave of heavy music produced some of the most emotionally direct recordings in rock history. They've been at it since 2019, mostly out of LA, mostly for people who already know what coldwave is and don't need it explained. Ryan Young has been fronting it since 2002 out of Minneapolis, gravel voice, bass you feel in your chest, folk-punk and pop-punk overlapping so completely that the crowd knows the words better than the band does some nights. Some bands belong to a city the way fog belongs to a coastline. The Black Heart Procession — Pall Jenkins and Toby Nathaniel's mournful, piano-and-singing-saw slowcore — is San Diego's, and has been since the late-90s underground when they and Three Mile Pilot quietly defined what this town sounded like after midnight. They don't play often. When they do it at the Casbah — the little Kettner Boulevard room where half the city's music history actually happened — it isn't a concert so much as a reunion of everyone who was there and everyone who wishes they had been. The songs are heavy and slow and beautiful, the kind you feel behind your sternum.
