Wynton Marsalis has led this orchestra for a generation, turning a big band into the keeper of an entire American art form, and this is his final season directing it. He is spending part of that farewell on John Coltrane, a centennial program for the man who bent the saxophone toward the sacred, played under open sky by the finest big band working today.
